The Protner farm lies in the north-eastern part of Slovenia, in the hinterland of Maribor, in the hills of Slovenske gorice. This region is known for its friendly people, fertile vineyards and fruit gardens. From here you can enjoy the breathtaking view over the Drava and Pesnica valley, the Pohorje mountain range, and the mountains of Kope and Donačka gora.
We are engaged in integrated grape and wine production and we grow fruit and vegetables in an environmentally friendly way. We serve home-made delicacies (minced lard, grilled sausages, home-made salami, cooked sausages, home-baked bread, sweet cheese pastry called gibanica and wine) in our inn with 60 seats. In our bed and breakfast there is room for 11 guests.
White wines with a bouquet reminiscent of fruit and flowers and a refreshing dry taste are typical of Styria (Štajerska), the biggest wine growing region in Slovenia.
Characteristic varieties are also lovingly nurtured at the Protner farm: Laska and Rhine Riesling, Sauvignon, Kerner, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Rice and Muscat Ottonel. The wines we offer are light, fresh and fruity, with slightly more residual sugar.
We have dry and sweet wines in our range - this is how we satisfy different tastes with the selection.
We offer the semi-sweet Protner blend and the dry Protner Cuvée wine. Wine blends consist of two or more varieties of wine, which are typical of every wine growing region. Usually the wine blend is named after the wine growing region or after the surname of the winemaker.
Moreover, we sell the varietal wines Laški Rizling, Renski Rizling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Muscat Ottonel, Pinot Gris and Kerner. We are also very proud of our own medium dry sparkling wine, which is produced by the classical method.
Our alcoholic beverages assortment includes home made spirits and liquors. To produce our spirits we use wine distillation. The wine spirit ages in oak barrels and this gives it its characteristic taste, aroma and colour. Our liqueur assortment comprises wine, cherry and walnut liquors. We also offer home made plum brandy.
Our spirits and liqueurs are bottled in classic bottles (0.75 l, 1 l) and in themed bottles, which are an excellent gift for different occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries and weddings.
Sparkling wine remains an important element of any special event and can be served as an aperitif, pairing perfectly with caviar or oysters. Combining Protner sparkling wine with savoury dishes is also an extremely pleasing combination for the taste buds.
Our sparkling wine reveals an exceptional elegance, freshness and a rich, full flavour. In addition, the hearty bubbles provide a tingling and refreshing taste experience.
Pinot gris is a white wine grape variety that never fails to surprise. It makes an excellent wine, with a subtle fruity bouquet. On the palate, the wine's multifaceted and lively character comes to the fore. Pinot gris is a bud sport of Pinot noir; the wine develops a light delicate pink colour from contact with the grape skins. This makes the wine very pleasing to the eye and adds elegance.
Sauvignon is a world-famous grape variety that also thrives on the soils of Slovenian Styria. The wine’s typical bouquet is reminiscent of elderflower, freshly cut grass and blackcurrant. This wine variety is characterised by a balanced combination of aroma and freshness.
White Riesling is often called the king of white wines. It commands a lot of affection not only in the cellar, but even whilst still in the vineyard, as is right and proper for a royal! The young White Riesling has an extremely fruity, fresh and playful aroma. It is only with age that White Riesling develops the mineral and stony aromas that give this wine the character for which it is known.
This grape variety is probably the oldest grape variety in the world and was known even to ancient civilisations. It owes its popularity to its aromatic taste. Both the grapes and the wine have a distinct muscat aroma.
Kerner is a white wine variety originating from Germany. It was created by crossing Red Trollinger and White Riesling. This is a wine with a sweet aroma reminiscent of white and tropical fruits. Despite its sweet taste, this wine is still very refreshing.
Chardonnay is a variety that is known all over the world and is very popular with winemakers for its outstanding results. The wine has a fruity aroma reminiscent of pears, peaches and apples.
Chardonnay Barik was made with a great deal of attention and patience! Wines aged in barrels develop complexity and present themselves with buttery nuances tasting of vanilla or caramel.
In Slovenian Styria, cuvées, or blends, have become a major trend, producing outstanding, fresh and enjoyable wine. The blending of different traditional wine varieties creates an ideal combination in this semi-dry blend.
Blaufränkisch (also known as Lemberger) is an indigenous Slovenian grape variety. The wine has a red colour with a hint of violet and a distinctive fruity aroma reminiscent of berry fruit. It is rich in antioxidants, especially resveratrol, which has been shown to be effective in lowering cholesterol and is good for the heart.
